Suhua Highway Renshui Tunnel
Golden Way Award for Outstanding Engineering – 1st Place
The Renshui Tunnel on Taiwan Provincial Highway No. 9 Suhua Highway (C2 Renshui Tunnel) is situated within the general control and special landscape area of Taroko National Park.
Spanning approximately 2.9 kilometers, this single-bore, two-way tunnel boasts a cross-sectional area 30% larger than those of typical twin-bore tunnels, making it Taiwan’s largest road tunnel in terms of cross-sectional area.
Given that the project was situated in an area with rare plants and conservation-class animals, special technical measures minimized disruption to the local flora and fauna. Also, the project’s carbon emissions were assessed according to international standards.
Throughout the construction period, CEC employed a tunnel seismic prediction system to monitor excavations in real time and provide advance warning if any potential issues. In the end, CEC completed the project one month ahead of schedule while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety.
C2 Renshui Tunnel construction quality earned first-place recognition in the 2021 Golden Way Award (Outstanding Engineering Category) by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
